LAST MEETING

"Experimental materials and procedures"
Engineer Eric Backensto
University of Alabama-Birmingham Biomedical Department

A video presentation was given on the new procedures on neural implants. The objective is to track brain signals to determine bad signals causing seizures or involuntary muscle spasms. The old technique consisted of a signal probe inserted into the brain cavity. The readings were crude compared to the new methods. Footage of an actual procedure on an 11 year old boy who suffered from seizures was shown. In the new procedure a plate containing a grid of sensors is surgical placed under the skull. The grid now provides a a three dimensional image of brain signals. Over a five day period the signals are monitored and the sections sending improper signals which lead to seizures are mapped. These mapped sections are then surgically removed. The signals are then monitored again to ensure a complete correction. Old techniques could not approach the rate of success of this new procedure. The next improvement will be the placement of an implant that will stimulate portions of the brain. This will allow a reversal of the treatment if a cure is ever developed. Mr. Backensto also discussed and displayed the hardware used for medical implants. These implants consist of a pump which releases medication or generate electrical signals. The drugs or signals block pain signal. Mr. Backensto attributes his success to his engineering education which allowed his a wide range of career selections.

ANNOUNCEMENTS The May 5 meeting will be held on the University of Tennessee Campus. The meeting will take place in the University Center in the Chickamunga Room located on the second floor. Parking is available in Lot 31 which is across the street from the Hamilton County Arena (UTC Roundhouse). Parking passes for lot 31 will be available at next weeks meeting.. This is the only lot available on May 5th with free parking. There are a limited number of parking meters and handicap spaces available in the lot next to the University Center. Future parking will be available in the parking garage which is under construction with a planned opening of May 30th. There will be a nominal charge for parking at that meeting.
