COMING PROGRAM Old Fashion Research
Albert and Doris Hicks

What past accomplishments may be lurking in your family tree? By the time Albert and Doris Hicks had completed their safari, they had discovered inventions patented by Albert's grandfather, great-grandfather and great uncle (15 his alone!), as well as Doris' grandfather. Come and see copies of the actual drawings for chain-link fence, a voting machine, a safety-pin manufacturing machine, clay grinding equipment and much, much more. Maybe you will be inspired to do some detective work into your own family tree. There may be more there than just pirates and horse thieves!

NOTE LOCATION CHANGE TO THE UTC UNIVERSITY CENTER, 2nd FLOOR CHICAMUNGA ROOM. SEE DIRECTIONS BELOW.

LAST MEETING Mr. John Homa, project manager of TVA Environmental services, presented the Tennessee Valley Authority's Waste Stream Reduction Program. The comprehensive program was driven by regulator requirements, community citizenship and environmental responsibility. The 1983 TVA waste of 200 million kilograms was reduced by 81.5% and realized a cost savings of $350,000. The waste consisted of 40% paper, 25% food, 15% cardboard, 10% glass, 5% plastic, 5% aluminum/steel and 5% varied waste. A comprehensive program was established which included: desk side paper recycling bins, coffee mug replacement of Styrofoam, office furniture refurbishing, reuse of materials, purchasing emphasis on environmental friendly products, team formation for waste reduction ideas and donations of dimmed lighting tubes, computer disks, and carpeting to local schools. This comprehensive program continues today with waste source audit which identify more reductions. More information can be obtained by calling 1-888-871-5201.
