Digital Versatile Disc, Digital Video Disc, or just simply
DVD In August 1995, the sponsors of the two competing specifications for high-density CD, Philips/Sony and the Time Warner/Toshiba-led SD Alliance, announced, at the IFA show in Berlin, that they would discuss the possibility of creating a single unified format. A month later, in September 1995, the once-at-odds factions announced that they had agreed to a compromise, and published an outline of the basic physical specifications. More details were promised in October. When those long-awaited details saw light of day in December, a new name for the compromise format was announced--DVD, which stands for Digital Video Disc, Digital Versatile Disc, or nothing at all, depending on whom you ask. Consolidated Media Systems maybe able to sort out the arguments and more importantly your potential use of this high density storage format. NOTE LOCATION CHANGE TO 535 Chestnut Street. (the former IBM building next to the former Greyhound Bus Stattion which is next to the Clarion Hotel, former meeting place of the Engineers Club! The meeting begins at 12:00 noon. Lunch is on your own before or after the presentation. ) Program Chair: Uwe Zitzow |
| LAST MEETING | Albert and Doris Hicks displayed drawings of inventions patented
by Albert's grandfather, great-grandfather and great uncle (15 his alone!),
as well as Doris' grandfather. Actual drawings for chain-link fence, a
voting machine, a safety-pin manufacturing machine, and clay grinding equipment
from patent office records were shown. These records were from the late
1800's to early 1900's. Doris provided tips on searching your family tree
for inventors and inventions. There are numerous patent office depositories
around the nation that can be search. Some have only listings, some listing
and abstracts and some the full documentation. The reference desk in the
library will be able to guide you. (Don't forget our own UTC and Chattanooga
State libraries for technical searches. Both are open to the public. You
can also find many Government materials at http://www.channel1.com/users/paulk/fed.htm)
