We continue our monthly program on public utilities.

Program Chair: Terry Reynolds

LAST MEETING Mr. J.D. Cope of Dalton Utilities presented the history, present and future outlook for his company. Dalton Utilities was founded in 1884 to provide fire protection and water to residents and service industrial needs for the Crown Cotton Mill. In 1913 a charter was issued that extended the service area beyond the Dalton Community. The utility now provides electrical, natural gas, water and wastewater treatment to 12,000 electrical meters (1.2 billion kilowatt hours), gas to 9000 meters in Floyd, Gordon and Whitfield counties, water to 27000 customers, and wastewater treatment to 8236 residential, 1893 industrial/commercial customers. Looking toward the future Dalton Utilities launched a strategic planning process in March 1997 including a vision, mission and guiding principles. Mr. Cope predicts that the utilities industry will face the same rocky journey suffered by the airline industry under deregulation. The few final survivors will be those that produce their own utilities at a low cost. Dalton Utilities is part owner of two nuclear and two fossil-fuel generating plants.
