COMING
PROGRAM Mr. Todd Stancombe,
Senior Vice President of Duke Solutions, Duke Energy Company
The subject of Mr. Standcombe's presentation will be the emerging energy
services industry. Mr. Stancombe will discuss deregulation and the impact
customer choice will have in the emerging energy services industry.
Mr. Stancombe is an alumnus of Hixson High. Chair William Gurley
Last Week's Program UTC's Chancellor Stacy was the featured speaker. He
discussed his seventy days in office and perception of changes in higher
education.
He stressed the need to re-invent ourselves as every business has had to
re-invent themselves in times of dramatic change. He noted some major
shifts in higher education: Students are media literate and have access to
multiple information sources in addition to the professor; Information and
the methods of access are changing at amazing rates; The professor's role is
changing from lecturer to something else; Though UTC can brag about its best
buy at $2500, the cost of higher education is increasing. [This rate can be
compared to a nation engineering tuition average of $11,000]; The mix of
funding sources for public institutions has changed. This requires a
university to look toward multiple source fund raising as standard practice.
UTC benefits from a community committed to its success; 75% of entering U.S.
freshman require remedial courses. Before criticism is directed toward the
K-12 schools we must consider who educated the teachers; Higher Education.
Thus UTC has an aggressive partnership with the Chattanooga School System.
He outlined the challenges of and his commitment to UTC's engineering
program: Maintain program quality in a rapidly expanding and changing
environment, improve the technology infrastructure of laboratories,
establish a doctorate program meeting local, regional and state needs, and
acquire an engineering and computer science building.
He requested the continued assistance of the engineering community.
