THIS WEEK____________________________________________________________
February 8 - This is our first teleconferencing program. Dr. Tony Gabriel of Oak Ridge National Laboratory will address us from Oak Ridge with a broad overview of the Spallation Neutron Source. The Nation's Next-generation Neutron Scattering Facility is a $1.3 billion scientific mega-project to be constructed on U. S. Department of Energy's Oak Ridge, Tennessee reservation. Dr. Tony Gabriel is the Senior Team Leader of the Target System for the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) Project. He is part of the Nuclear Analysis and Sheilding Section in the ORNL Computational Physics and Engineering Division. Please note that the communication link will take place promptly at 12:00 noon in Fletcher Hall, Room 212. Marriott will not be providing lunch. However, Chicamauga Room will be available from 11:00 a.m. Lunch can be brought in from UTC cafeteria, home, other food vendors, etc. Please hold fellowship as usual, but plan to walk up the hill to Fletcher Hall by 11:45. As we attempt to bring alternative programming such as this, please give us your input and feedback.

LAST WEEK____________________________________________________________
Dr. Clinton Smullen, director of the Center of Excellence for Computer Applications at UTC, to spoke to us on Video Streaming. Video Streaming is one of the technology that can deliver reasonably quality video via the Internet. Dr. Smullen provided a perspective of various methods that can be used to transmit and display multimedia on the web. Due to the size of the large original video files, video compression is an essential element of any video transmission. Furthermore, it requires special techniques to reduce the transport overhead. He showed how video streaming takes advantage of a specialized server, which works in conjunction with a web server to manage the stream of video between the server and the client. The server can dynamically modify the rate of transmission based on network congestion and other factors. The outline of Dr. Smullen's presentation can be found at www.utc.edu/ceca/video99.htm. For more information on Video Streaming also check out www. streamingvideos.com.

ITEM OF INTEREST_____________________________________________________
Please be reminded that the weekly meetings will satisfy one hour of PDH by putting in additional research time. Note the web sites provided.

A task force is being formed to generate corporate interest in Chattanooga Engineers Club and other engineering societies. Please contact Greg Sedrick if you have ideas or want to be on the team.

February 18 meeting of the IEEE Computer Society will be on Distant Learning Delivery Programs. The presenters will be from Anderson Soft-Teach, a leader in computer-base training.
