THIS WEEK____________________________________________________________
Dr. Robert Goulet, UTC Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering, will discuss a research program that he is directing in the area of orthopedic engineering. This program is a joint program with the UTC College of Engineering and Computer Science and the Orthopedics Department of the University of Tennessee College of Medicine at Erlanger Medical Center. The research involves Dr. Goulet's collaboration with orthopedic surgeons and orthopedic residents on studies involving positioning and attaching prosthetic devices, installation of plates to immobilize bone fractures as they heal, modes of fracture resulting from accidents and other topics as the research evolves. An Instron testing machine has been jointly purchased by UTC and the Orthopedics Department at UTCOM to support the research. Program Chair, Dr. Phil Kazemersky.

LAST WEEK____________________________________________________________
Kevin Lee is a Math and Science teacher and Wrestling Coach at Boyd Buchanan. Tina Lee teaches Science and Spanish. This husband and wife team have been a supporter of Chattanooga Engineering and Science Fair since 1989. They have devoted many after school hours to the annual event. At Boyd Buchanan, a science project is a requirement for both the Physical Science and the Life Science classes. Mr. Lee gave a very passionate presentation on his belief that the participation in the science projects have encouraged many of his students into pursuing a science career. At Boyd Buchanan, the Science Fair starts in September, each student has to come up with a scientific question, and the project activities will attempt to arrive at a conclusion. Mr. Lee said he has the best database on the best stain remover, best laundry soap, longest lasting batteries. He really liked the ingenuity of some students, there was a project on applying electrical shock to revive a population of drowned beetles. Mr. and Mrs. Lee asked that the students maintain their original hypothesis even if they later found it to be false. Mr. Lee thinks the annual project gave the students very invaluable experiences in research, organization, and marketing, some of the skills we are still learning. Boyd Buchanan students have received top honors, the Junior Division Plaques from the Chattanooga Science Fair in 1995, 1997, and 1998. A Boyd Buchanan student that received the NASA award four years ago, saved his NASA pass, and was able to use it recently to attend John Glenn's recent launch. Hopefully, the presentation will inspire some of us to volunteer to mentor or assist in the Science Fair, at the regional level, or at your local schools.
