THIS WEEK____________________________________________________________
Ed Buice will lead us in a tour of the Chattanooga Police Department Communication Center, including the 911 Center on Amnicola Highway. This is second of the monthly long joint meeting with IEEE. CARTA will provide a no-cost shuttle from TVA (11am), and back (1:30pm).
Pre-ordered lunch from Schlotzsky's will be delivered. The box lunch will be $7.00. Advance lunch orders need to have been placed with Uwe Zitzow.

LAST WEEK___________________________________________________________

Scott Short spoke to CEC and IEEE members on CAPE Creation of Doble State - Simulation Data Files for End to End Relay Testing. CAPE stands for computer aided protection engineering. End to end refers to the satellite sychronization being implemented. Doble Protest is the TVA chosen software program for testing. Provided with voltage and current sources test sets, the simulations can be controlled by computers. The process requires model simulation of the system from CAPE, and accurate data files. CUPL is the programming language used by CAPE. It is similar to BASIC. The test macros are created for the program and tailored for power system modeling. The simulation codes are said to be easy to create. There are more than 54 fault scenarios in place. The test sets (V, I) are emailed to CAPE. There are macros created to evaluate various fault points at many locations. Fault points are designed to check and verify transmission. With this dynamic testing tool in place, a remote computer can activate mechanical relays, exercise some that may be sitting idle. Idle mechanical components have a tendency to fail at times of need. The exercises are designed to prevent failure. The system is also a great way to check new installations, where large percentage of failures occur.
Many of the designed test scenarios also are recording knowledge of the
more experienced workers, such information are programmed into systematic check lists.
