THIS WEEK____________________________________________________________
Tiffany Gibby will give a demonstration of engineering resources on the World Wide Web and the use of several web search utilities. Examples will include standards information, the Thomas Register, and links for several different engineering disciplines. Tiffany develops and maintains information for the TOMnet web server at TVA's Transmission & Power Supply. She has been using Internet resources since 1992. Tiffany is also responsible for the CEC web page.

LAST WEEK____________________________________________________________
Chuck Chamberlin, former manager of telecommunications at TVA, co-founder of Business Data Resource Company, and Manager of Network Systems at CSTCC, presented on Extranet, the business communication network. Using a manufacturing company as a model, the presentation explored the data exchange within the company across department boundaries, software applications, and geographic locations. Technologies have enabled the exchange of information at a faster mode, via express mail, fax, phone, and the web. The most efficient exchange is using the web, where the exact document can be transported from one computer to another. Since 1970's, many advances have facilitated the true exchange of information. Chuck discussed EDI (electronic data interchange), translation software, VAN (value added networks), VPN (virtual private networks), firewalls, and DMZ (de-military zone) in a corporate network system. Many of us have already come in contact with some of the extranets, such as making purchases on the internet, tracking a Fedex or UPS package, taking a distance learning course, checking inventory level on a supplier. Chuck noted the most important part of web transactions is the security of the information. He advises that we check the URL, or the locator, to make sure the page extension is either .shtm or .shtml.
