THIS WEEK____________________________________________________________
Freddie Wilkerson, Electronic Commerce Account Manager of United Parcel Service in Nashville, Tennessee, will present "E-Commerce - Privacy on the Internet". In just a few years, e-mail has become a preferred means of business communication. Concerns about security and privacy continue to grow. UPS has developed E-Commerce solutions to ease some of the fear about transacting commerce over the internet. This presentation will focus on the use of encryption technology to confront these concerns.

LAST WEEK____________________________________________________________
Bill Chapman, Vice-President Operations of EPB Telecommunications presented on the development of the telecommunications business at EPB. Mr. Chapman moved to Chattanooga in May to assume operation responsibilities in the new division of EPB. Prior to his arrival, Ron Fugatt, led the effort to gain EPB's telecommunication certification in February. Telecommunication is a fast pace business to enter. Mr. Chapman pointed out that it took 32 years to reach 10 million telephone lines, 22 years to install 10 million fax lines, 9 years to have 10 million pc's, but only 2 years to have 10 million log on to the internet. The traditional two year process to develop a business plan is no longer valid. EPB is competing in a 7 CLEC market, by their launch date of March 1, 2000, he thinks there will be eight or more CLEC's in Chattanooga. EPB is focusing on the business to business communication. EPB has partnered with BellSouth in their communication network. With a 35 mile OC48 ring around downtown and Brainerd, and BellSouth partnership, EPB will be able to service the greater Chattanooga area. EPB Telecommunication plans to employ 30 employees by launch date, and 60 employees at full staff. The division plans to be cash positive by 2002, with 10,000 lines in year 2003.
