Freddie Wilkerson, Electronic Commerce Account Manager of United Parcel Service spoke on "E-Commerce - Privacy on the Internet". UPS is known for its package delivery system, road and air. UPS is embracing the new commerce technology by be investing 10 million over the last ten years to position itself to deliver information as well. Mr. Wilkerson defined and discussed several electronic commerce terminologies, such as privacy, authentication, security, secret key encryption, public key encryption, and digital signature and digital certification. With the recent computing advances from 8 bit to 128 bit, commerce on the Internet can assume security. UPS has partnered with various companies to provide on line tools to achieve supply chain integration. Web page examples of Marshall, MiconPC, and Just for Feet were used to show how vendors and manufacturers could utilize UPS on line tools to cost effectively handle customer inquiries. UPS is offering document exchange solutions as another electronic commerce service. 70% of documents are digitally produced, but transported physically, 2 billion e mails are sent daily, 50% of corporate phone bills are fax related, and 30% of faxes are resent. Aberdeen Group estimates 35% of business documents will move across the Internet by year 2001. UPS will provide tracking, security, authentication, cancellation, and return receipt features to electronic packages, as the company does with physical packages.
