BellSouth's ADSL Service, "Turn your phone line in a super-fast means of electronic transfer." Ellen Lail and Jason Tatum of BellSouth Business will explain the ADSL provided by Bellsouth. To include how the service works, why you would like it, and locations where the service is available in the Chattanooga area.
ADSL (Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line) Service is a new technology that supplies three separate frequency channels over the same phone line. Phone conversations are carried on one channel, while data from an Internet Service Provider or Network Service Provider to the user is transferred downstream on another channel. The third channel carries data upstream from the user. The combined voice/data service can keep residential and business personal-computer users connected to the Internet around the clock using their existing phone lies.
The combination of the voice and data frequencies on the same line allows customer to chat on the phone while utilizing the Internet at the same time. The most exciting feature of ADSL technology is its capability of transmitting downstream information 30-100 times faster than the ordinary 28.8 kbps modem.

LAST WEEK___________________________________________________________________
Approximately 50 people participated in the tour of the new Channel 9 facility at 4279 Benton Drive, off Hwy. 58 South. Besides a tour of the facility, participants enjoyed drinks and deserts, and a warm welcome from Jerry Lingerfelt, WTVC Channel 9's general manager. Jerry Lingerfelt and Dennis Brown, the station's Chief Engineer, led two groups through the yet unoccupied facility. Before the December 17 moving date arrive, there are wires and cables to be pulled, broadcasting equipment to be installed, and logistic to be worked out for the midnight switching from the old set to the new. In the empty marketing department, Mr. Lingerfelt explained the fine art of selling air. Along with WRCB, WTVC command the higher ratings in the Chattanooga market, therefore can obtain higher advertising revenue. It may seem longer to viewers, but a typical one hour program has 12 minutes of advertising time. WTVC sells 30 second spots of commercial time. The cost of the commercial time is dependent on the rating of the particular program. Mr. Lingerfelt said the stations revenue depends on the effort of the 58 sales personnel.
WTVC utilize the satellite dish located on Signal Mountain to receive its national broadcasts from ABC. It will utilize a new dish at the new location to receive the syndicated shows WTVC purchased. WTVC has direct feed from CNN and other news affiliates. WTVC in turn feed their programming to Comcast. The new facility is designed to take in new advances in broadcasting technology, it is designed to handle digital signals, however, it will still function with the various analog equipment that exist. Support equipment such as lighting, sound, and graphics can be pre-programmed. Short of seeing a station in operation, the tour was very informative.
