CHATTANOOGA ENGINEERS CLUB http://www.utc.edu/~engrcs/cec/cec.htm Volume LI February 21, 2000 12:00 noon Number 7 UTC Student Center Tennessee Room THIS WEEK__________________________________________________________________ Mr. Jim Frierson will be the E Week Kickoff Luncheon speaker. Mr. Frierson will discuss the future of the high speed rail system and it's impact on our area. The proposal is to install a high speed rail system between Chattanooga and Atlanta airports. One of possible route is to follow the path of Interstate 75. Recently, Chattanooga was ranked as the 37th most likely site for companies. The high speed rail would further improve the access to our area and businesses. The E Week People-to-People award will be presented at the Luncheon. LAST WEEK___________________________________________________________________ Another well attended meeting at the Cellar. Mr. Jeff Averbeck, President/CEO of Smartech, and Mr. Shane Sexton, Network Manager of NextLec, spoke to us about the streaming media technology. Smartech is the programming partner/wing of NextLec. Streaming media is the technology that will enable the delivery of audio, video, multimedia files. NextLec is building the information highway for the transmission of such data. Partnering with MCI Worlcom, NextLec will have the high speed network(s) necessary for the delivery of large digital files, such as full length movies. To assure control and integrity of data, NextLec is setting up media farms at cities, purchasing segments from BellSouth. NextLec recommended Microsoft Media Player. Many of the streaming media projects were successful using the commonly available application. NextLec is involved with many e commerce projects. As more and more company move to electronic business transaction, the demand for bandwidth will continue to rise. Microsoft, as a company, accepts only electronic invoices. NextLec sees the strengthening of the supply chain relationship.
