THIS WEEK__________________________________________________________________
Martha Rollins, Manager of Bioenergy and Renewable Energy > Technologies at
TVA Public Power Institute, will present "Renewable Energy for the Tennessee
Valley". Following the overview from last week's program, this presentation
will provide one aspect of the Institute's involvement with energy
alternatives.

LAST WEEK___________________________________________________________________
Anda Ray, Interim Director of the TVA Public Power Institute (PPI) >
provided an overview of the institute. The institute was created in April
1999. The Public Power Institute (PPI) presents new ideas and technologies
to the world of electric energy. The institute will endorse ideas after
examining all the costs of power generation, delivery, and use by consumers.
Research and development targets three areas:
* Production and delivery of energy
* How energy products are used
* How energy production, delivery, and use impact the environment.
Research and development begins with partnerships. Once developed, new
technologies are taken to local communities for testing. If a technology
proves to be useful and worthwhile, it is applied to real-world problems.
The Public Power Institute focusing on new ways to
* Create energy technologies that are clean and sustainable
* Decrease the pollution associated with power production
* Reduce industrial waste
* Help consumers use electricity more efficiently in their homes and
businesses.
Through the Public Power Institute, TVA is acting as a living laboratory, a
body to set standards, and a hub for information. Currently, 75% of PPI is
funded by TVA, the goal is to be only 50% supported by TVA by the end of
2000. The other 50% will come from commercial partners. PPI wants to
create a healthy tension between public and private power supplier. The
tension is needed to generate challenges and balance.

No idea is so outlandish that it should not be considered with a searching,
but at the same time, a steady eye. (Winston Churchill)
