THIS WEEK__________________________________________________________________
Gary Forrester, project engineer on the Apison Substation, will present the
construction and engineering details on EPB's newest source station. Apison
Substation is one of eight EPB substations in our area.

LAST WEEK___________________________________________________________________
Alan Voss coordinated our visit to TVA Map Store,
http://www.tva.gov/mapstore/.
The Map sales office is part of Geographic Information and Engineering
(GI&E) (formerly Maps and Surveys) facilities, which provides a public sales
outlet for all the TVA Map products. These include aerial photography, from
the 1920's to the present, topographic maps, navigation maps and charts,
recreation maps, hiking maps, region and area maps, TVA property maps, and
digital topographic maps.
We were also introduced to the production facilities GI&E see the latest in
computer mapping techniques, and the production of Geographic Information
System (GIS) databases.
The tour included a visit to the Remote Sensing area, where flight
photography, using infrared sensing, records and translate non-point source
data. With some generally accepted assumptions, the information is to
verify environmental data, such as watershed and water vegetation.
G&IE are involved in many power projects. Maps are needed by power
operation in environmental permits. Maps and other documentation have seen
the most growth in power projects. In delivery the data needed for many
power projects, for the design of transmission line, as much information as
possible is gathered. Some data will also benefit other projects.
We had the opportunity to also hear from Bill Massa, former chief of Map and
Services. He is a walking history book of the Mapping efforts of TVA, as
well as some of the mapping done for the federal government. TVA Mapping
supplied foreign maps during WWII, Korean War, and the Vietnam War. TVA
also mapped possible invasion routes in New York State, Texas, and the
Carolinas for the Department of Defense. During the height of its
operation, Mapping employed 20 surveyors, and 82 mapping employees. The
personnel and project load has decreased.
It has been 15 years since some of maps have been updated. There is no
longer a periodic update schedule for TVA maps.
Over 30 members enjoyed a very informative tour. Many purchased various
maps from the Map Store.
