WEEK___________________________________________________________________
Dr.
Neslihan Alp, assistant professor at University of Tennessee at
Chattanooga,
School of Computer Science and Engineering, speak to us on lean
education as
related to the lean manufacturing concept. It has been proven
that the lean
manufacturing can improve any organization, but how can it be
applied to the
vast systems within a university. "Lean Transformation" is a
leading
indicator of a profound change in the business culture and the
purpose of the
"Lean Education" is to expand learning opportunities by
reaching a larger
population of engineering professionals and industries.
The principles of the
lean education have the following focus points:
* Reach more students
*
JIT teaching approach by using the course modularization
* Quality of
teaching environment
* Quality of learning environment
* Team work
*
Pursuit of perfection
The transformation will be achieved through
modularization of courses, in
traditional and non traditional degree
programs, as well as certificate
programs. Courses are being developed
for web based delivery. There are
three courses being implemented as
distance learning classes, more will be
developed. Eventually, all
engineering management courses will be available
on the web.
For more
detail, see
www.utc.edu/~engrcs/web/web.html.
Due
to our inability to provide an internet connection, Dr. Alp was not able
to
show the course material during the presentation. She did provide
a
guest account for us to access the "Technical Project Management"
course.
The following is the Internet address:
