CHATTANOOGA ENGINEERS CLUB http://www.utc.edu/~engrcs/cec/cec.htm Volume LI July 17, 2000 12:00 noon The Cellar at Union Square THIS WEEK__________________________________________________________________ David Passmore, CEO of Bachman Learning Center, in McDonald, Tennessee, will speak on "How Technology Enhances Special Education". Bachman Learning Center is a special need school for students with learning disabilities. Fred Lupton is our program chair. LAST WEEK___________________________________________________________________ Dr. Richard Edwards, Professor of Management and Chair, Division of Business and Technology at Dalton State College spoke to us on DSC's four year programs. Dalton State will be delivering courses toward Bachelor of Science in Management of Information Systems and Management of Industrial Operations, and Bachelor of Applied Science in Technology Management. Both of the management degrees are hoping to capture the students that have completed two year programs such as Associate of Science or Associate of Applied Science degrees. There will be graduates from the four year program by May 2001. DSC is looking into the possibility of offering two more degrees by 2001, the degrees will be in marketing and social works. Dalton State's current enrolment is 3000 students, and has been the same for the last five years. Hope Scholarship has not generated increase in its enrolment. Dr. Edwards expressed concerns that some of Hope Scholarship recipients should required developmental courses prior to taking the college level courses. The requirement for Hope is being changed to exclude non-academic classes in calculating students grade average. Dr. Edwards believe DSC is providing the education for non traditional students. It is serving the population that may not have planned to pursue a four year degree, such as people that have entered the workforce after high school, or ended their education with a two year degree from Chattanooga State, Cleveland State, or Dalton Community College. Work place or personal career goal may demand some continuing education. Dalton State hopes to provide another education path for the community. Dalton is able to offer in-state tuition to two Tennessee counties, Hamilton and Bradley. But the Hope Scholarship is only eligible to Georgia residents.
