THIS WEEK__________________________________________________________________
Jim Barrott, Dean of Engineering, Environmental, and Emergency Technologies
Division will introduce four new program initiatives at Chattanooga State
for this fall, Chemical Process Technology, Pre-Apprentice Electrical
Lineman, CAD Technology (revamped), and Construction Management. Case
studies are frequently used in law, business, and medical education but not
so in technology and engineering education. Recently a multi-media case
study based on a manufacturing process at Brach Confectionaries was
developed for use in engineering and engineering technology education.
Additional to the four programs, Mr. Barrott will present the Brach Gummi
Bear Case Study.

LAST WEEK___________________________________________________________________
David Passmore, CEO of Bachman Learning Center, in McDonald, Tennessee,
talked about the changes going on at Bachman. Mr. Passmore came to the
center with 20 years of experience in special education. Bachman was
established in 1912 as a residential school. In recent years, Bachman
Learning Center is transforming to be a special need school for students
with learning disabilities.
Bachman accepts students from the ages of 10 through 18 years of age. The
Center is prepared to educate children who are academically underachieving
and may be faced with the challenges of ADD, ADHD or other specific learning
disability.
At Bachman, besides the core curriculum of math, reading, science, history,
computer, English, and Art, the education experience can include a
wilderness component, including a ropes course, wall climbing, hiking,
camping and canoeing. The Learning Center also has a new computer lab.
There are extra curricular classes in art, music, and drama. Evening
programs, or mini workshops, that introduce skill craftsmen from the
community. Prevocational programs such as animal husbandry, auto mechanics,
woodworking, and landscape design are offered.
Most classes are focused on hands on learning to address the special need of
the children. Students are involved in many of the Center's projects, such
as the designing and the making of the 14 acre lake.
Mr. Passmore is continuing to seek out volunteers as well as donations for
school resources.
For more information on the The Center, see www.bachmanlearningcenter.org.

Fred Lupton is the program chair.
