LAST WEEK________________________________________________________________
Jim Barrott, Dean of Engineering, Environmental, and Emergency Technologies
Division introduced four new program initiatives at Chattanooga State,
Chemical Process Technology, Pre-Apprentice Electrical Lineman, CAD
Technology (revamped), and Construction Management. Being the community's
college, programs at Chattanooga State are designed in response to needs of
local industries and companies. Chemical Process Technology and the
Electrical Lineman program are designed with the inputs of DuPont and EPB.
The CAD and Construction programs are revised and created to answer the needs
of specific industries.
Mr. Barrott talked about classes and programs that are being delivered on
site in companies such as DuPont and Wheeland. Delivery formats range from
traditional classroom setting, many with hands-on labs, to distance learning
classes using video or internet.
Mr. Barrott demonstrated a multi-media case study based on a manufacturing
process at Brach Confectionaries. The Brach Gummi Bear Case Study was
documented by students and faculty, with the help of engineers from the
local company. The case study was developed for use in engineering and
engineering technology classes. Mr. Barrott said the project was a fun and
challenging for both students and faculty, and plans to encourage more
similar projects into the curriculum.
