THIS WEEK________________________________________________________________
Dr. Stephanie Smullen, Professor and Acting Department Head, Dr. Clint
Smullen, Professor and Director of CECA, of UTC School of Engineering and
Computer Science, will introduce two new certificate programs, Computer
Networking and Internet Application Programming. Both are post-baccalaureate
certificate programs designed to enhance the skills of computing
professionals. The Networking program will prepare individuals to assume
leadership roles in designing and implementing computer networking projects.
The Internet Application Program will train project leaders in designing and
implementing company intranet and Internet system.
LAST WEEK________________________________________________________________
Dr. Jesse Register, Superintendent of Hamilton County School, was excited
about the new school year. After four years as the Superintendent of the
combined school system, he sees positive changes in our schools, a fairly
smooth transition in the merged school system, nine new magnet schools, last
year's rezoning process, and hopefully, better school bus logistics. There
were challenges that had to be overcome during the first year of the merger,
but many schools have benefited from the changes. The magnet schools have
changed the distribution of the economic status in some schools. There were
schools that had 100% free lunch participation. Rezoning will help in some of
the overcrowding and low achievement problems. We will find out more about
the new bus routes by next week. Hamilton County will see more changes,
there are principals assigned to different schools for the new school year.
Dr. Register has reassigned some of the principals by matching the skills and
personality that are needed in some of the schools. There will be more
emphasis placed on professional development of 3000 Hamilton County teachers.
Dr. Register is hopeful that Hamilton County will receive or benefit from
two grants in the near future for professional development and curriculum
planning for secondary schools. He plans to utilize the grants to improve
math and science in the schools. Hamilton County schools continue to lose
teachers to areas around us due to lower pay, especially to North Georgia.
The county will start the school year with ten teaching vacancies. With UTC
only graduating one graduate in Math education, Dr. Register finds it
difficult to provide the personnel with the most needed skill in the schools.
Dr. Register listed many challenges ahead, schools that need to be upgraded
or rebuilt, new schools needed in growth areas, retention of teachers due to
lower pay in Tennessee, and the need for more and better math and science
teachers. With the excellent private schools in our area, Dr. Register
thinks the competition should promote an improved public school system. Dr.
Register plans to involve CEC in some of the science and technology
improvement projects in the future. Science Director, Dr. Barbara Fulmer
expressed her intention to tap into CEC's talent pool. Keep informed of the
schools by checking out www.hcde.gov
