THIS WEEK___________________________________________________________
Jim Johnston and Kenneth Flynn will update us on the current top priority
projects in and around Chattanooga. The list of projects will consist of
those on the two to five year plan with Tennessee Department of
Transportation.
This is a follow-up presentation from their report in June on I-75 and
Highway 153 interchange, and the Olgiati Bridge expansion.
Program Chair, Ron Burton.

LAST WEEK__________________________________________________________
Dr. Stephanie Smullen, Professor and Acting Department Head, and Dr. Clint
Smullen, Professor and Director of CECA, of UTC School of Engineering and
Computer Science, presented on the two new certificate programs, Computer
Networking and Internet Application Programming. The certificate programs are
designed to offer lifelong learning opportunities. Certificate programs can
better reflect the rapidly changing technology fields better than traditional
degree programs. Other state universities have implemented certificate
programs to satisfy the demands of the community around them. Completion of
the certificate programs can enhance the value of the individual in the
workplace. The certificate serves to validate that an individual has
completed a coherent block of knowledge.
UT system finally recognized the need and delineated the requirements for
certificate programs this past January. The computer science certificates
were the first UT certificate programs approved. UTC School of Engineering
and Computer Science is working with the School of Business to deliver other
certificate programs such as ones relating to e commerce or e business.
The curriculum in Computer Networking will provide technical knowledge of
data communication, local area network design and installation, operation of
the internet, and configuration of multiple network connections. Integration
of this knowledge is demonstrated by completion of required design and
implementation project. The instructors will be soliciting real projects
local businesses and organizations.
The course work in Internet Application Programming will include technical
knowledge of HTML, client-side scripting - Java Script, server-side scripting
- Perl, CGI, user interface design principles, Java and Java toolkits for
user interface design, database access techniques - rdo, odbc, dso, and XML.
Courses being offered this Fall are CpSc 526, 536, and 541.
