LAST WEEK________________________________________________________________ Jerry White, Business Partnership Coordinator of Hamilton County School, spoke to us about changes in our world and society, and some of the technology advances in the schools. There are now computers in all schools, students are accessing the internet daily. We may see paperless textbooks in the near future. Mr. White insists that there are certain components in education that could not, and should not change. Parents should supply the schools with children that are ready and motivated to learn. Schools will supply the teachers, materials, and facility that encourage learning. Studies have shown that most students are not challenged. Not being challenged will reduce their motivation in learning. Mr. White encourages members to volunteer as math tutors, and in reading programs. Hamilton County Department of Education has increased four staff development days for teachers. Mr. White asked that parents continue the leaning challenges at home. If students are learning the necessary education skills during the school day, additional practices are needed at home. The skills are not used when children sit in front of a television watching or playing video games. Hamilton County schools are also working with area companies in identifying the workforce development needs. The Career Clusters with advisors from businesses and higher education institutions have been meeting. Businesses, with rising training cost, and lack of qualified workers, are working with schools on basic skills, work ethics type issues. Paul Starnes, education consultant, and Chairman of Career Cluster Advisory Committee, talked briefly about the technical career clusters that have been implemented to prepare high school students beyond graduation. Focusing on careers that pay higher than minimum wage, a four-year plan is developed for each eighth grade student not following the college preparation plan. The four-year plan includes two years of secondary education and two years of post secondary education, which may leads to an associate or baccalaureate degree or a certificate in a career field. All students will pursue a program of study preparing them for either university or technical path. Students may wish to pursue a dual path curriculum. Students can change from one path to the other. Mr. Starnes invites the club and members to participate in future discussions.
