Cheryl Vilullo, Nurse Manager of Erlanger's Wound Center's explained the use
of the Hyperbaric Unit. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a medical treatment
that is used to treat a limited but diverseseries of illnesses. It may be the
primary treatment for some disorders, but it is often used as part of a
combined program of medical and surgical procedures. In order to provide
patients with hyperbaric therapy, a pressurized chamber is necessary.
Erlanger has three single patient chambers. The patient is placed within the
chamber; which is then compressed to a level ordered by the consulting
hyperbaric physician, using pure oxygen. Oxygen, when provided to a patient
in a hyperbaric chamber, greatly increases the amount of oxygen that can be
delivered to body tissues by the blood. All of the benefits provided by
hyperbaric oxygen therapy are the result of this extra oxygen being carried
in the bloodstream. Depending upon the reason for the patient's referral to
the Hyperbaric Medicine Service, hyperbaric oxygen will be used to provideone
or more of the following effects:
· Increased oxygen delivery to the injured tissue
· Greater blood vessel formation
· Advanced wound healing
· Improved infection control
· Preservation of damaged tissues
· Elimination of toxic substances
· Reduced effects from toxic substances
· Reduction or elimination of vascular obstruction by gas bubbles.
Physicians have conducted studies in other treatments utilizing the
hyperbaric unit, but the limitations seem to lie with the insurance coverage.
