Next Meeting  _______________________________________________________
Monday, February 5, 12:00 noon
Cellar Restaurant at Union Square
Downtown, Chattanooga

Change of Topic: Our speaker, Dr. Rekha S. Pillai,  had to cancel her speaking engagement due to illness. In her place we had:

A Case Study of Wireless Data Networking - Chuck Chamberlin,  Chattanooga State Community College

Our original plan was:

Topic: Intelligent Transportation Systems Help Meet the Transportation Challenge

A broad range of diverse technologies, known collectively as intelligent transportation systems (ITS), could hold the answer to many of our transportation problems.  These systems exploit currently available and emerging computer, communication, and vehicle-sensing technologies to monitor, manage, and control the highway transportation system.  With ITS, various levels of information will be available to make timely and informed travel decisions. People and goods can thus move safer and more efficiently. Furthermore, congestion, wasted energy and traffic accidents will be reduced.

Dr. Rekha S. Pillai will provide us an overview of what is happening today in the world of intelligent transportation systems.  Dr. Pillai is a Program Leader and Project Manager in the Center for Transportation Analysis, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Additional information on ITS can be found at: www.itsa.org

Past Meeting __________________________________________________________________
A large cadre of our members was treated to a fabulous and interesting tour of the Advanced Vehicle Systems, Inc. (AVS) manufacturing facility. AVS is probably the largest manufacturer of electric and hybrid gas/electric transit buses in the United States and may very well be the largest globally. In1998 AVS was awarded a new contract with the Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority, adding larger heavy duty, low floor hybrid electric buses to the product line. The contract called for three 35-foot and seven, 30-foot Hybrid-Electric buses to replace existing diesel buses.
