Field Trip: Sequoyah Nuclear Plant (Reservations Required)
AT OUR LAST MEETING _________________________________________

A group of UTC senior engineering students, under the auspices of AVS, designed and built a mobile test facility to investigate the interactions between battery packs and gas turbines of hybrid electric buses. Their objective was to develop a method that would measure the reaction of these systems to dynamic loads and in so doing, be able to improve the operation, especially the efficiency, of future bus models.

At their presentation to us last Monday, student team members, James Lowery and John Passafiume, Jr. provided us an overview of the approach they took in designing the mobile test stand and their use of LabVIEW as the data acquisition tool for collecting and displaying the data. The system monitors the voltage output from the buses' batteries, the power output from the turbine, and the temperature of several batteries within each battery pack. This allows researchers to determine how the battery temperature affects the voltage output and how that, in turn, effects the power output of the turbine.
