Cellar Restaurant at Union Square
Downtown, Chattanooga
Topic: Intelligent Transportation Systems Help Meet the Transportation Challenge
Dr. Rekha S. Pillai, ORNL
A broad range of diverse technologies, known collectively as intelligent transportation systems (ITS), could hold the answer to many of our transportation problems. These systems exploit currently available and emerging computer, communication, and vehicle-sensing technologies to monitor, manage, and control the highway transportation system. With ITS, various levels of information will be available to make timely and informed travel decisions. People and goods can thus move safer and more efficiently. Furthermore, congestion, wasted energy and traffic accidents will be reduced.
Dr. Rekha S. Pillai will provide us an overview of what is happening today in the world of intelligent transportation systems. Dr. Pillai is a Program Leader and Project Manager in the Center for Transportation Analysis, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Additional information on ITS can be found at: www.itsa.org
PAST MEETINGS_____________________________________
Before a crowded and enthusiastic audience, Tom Hancock, Vice President of TVA’s Transmission Operations and Maintenance, provided us with a perspective of how electric utilities came to be the way they are today. He also reviewed the current forces that are effecting major changes in the way that industry will operate in the future. He emphasized the largely ignored importance electric transmission lines play in allowing utilities to meet the increasing demands for electric power. Tom also described the approach TVA is taking to meet its present challenges.
