NEXT MEETING ___________________________________________________
Monday, July 23, 12:00 noon
Cellar Restaurant at Union Square
Downtown, Chattanooga
Topic: Trends in Surface Water Quality Management
Measures are underway to further reduce pollutants flowing into rivers and streams from industrial sources, city streets and private property. That is because EPA and other regulatory bodies are placing stricter requirements on the design, installation and maintenance of water erosion and pollution controls. These new requirements will affect not only the municipal storm water controls of larger cities, but increasingly of smaller cities as well. They will also impose more stringent erosion controls on contractors and developers.
Bill Payne, Storm Water Manager of Chattanooga Department of Public Works, will describe the trends in water quality requirements for surface run-off and the controls that are being implemented at the local, state and national levels. He will also describe how other countries are currently dealing with the quality of surface water run-off.
OUR PREVIOUS MEETING ________________________________________
When erosion threatened the Cape Hatteras Light House Complex on the Outer Banks of Coastal North Carolina, the National Park Service sought to rescue the complex by relocating it some 3000 feet to the southwest. The journey of this 5,000-ton structure and the engineering feat associated with lifting and moving it to its new location was the topic of our presentation. Randy Knott, Regional Chief Engineer and Vice President for Atlanta based Law Engineering, the contractor chosen to undertake the project, provided us a fascinating overview of what it took to get the job done and what interesting experiences occurred along the way.
