Monday, July 30, 11:30 a.m.

A Field Trip:   A tour of the printing presses of the Chattanooga News Free Press.

400 E. 11th Street

Operations Manager, Frank Anthony, will be our guide on an adventure that will let us see the inner workings of a modern newspaper. Frank will tour us through the circulation department, the computer room, the pre-press area with its electronics and plate-making facility and, of course, the large printing presses. Frank is anxious to show us the nuts and bolts of the operation and explain how it all work.

We will assemble in the reception desk of the Chattanooga News Free Press Building at 11:30 a.m. The address is 400 E. 11th Street. If you are coming from downtown on Market street, turn left by the old Patten Hotel (11th street) and continue up that street for about four blocks. The News-Free Press Building will be on your right. Free parking is available at any one of several parking lots across the street from the building. No reservations are required.

Bill Payne, Storm Water Manager of Chattanooga Department of Public Works, described the trends in water quality requirements for surface run-off and the controls that are being implemented at the local, state and national levels. Bill also described how other countries are currently dealing with the quality of surface water run-off.

EPA and other regulatory bodies are placing stricter requirements on the design, installation and maintenance of water erosion and pollution controls. The new regulations affect not only the municipal storm water controls of larger U.S. cities, but smaller cities as well. They also impose more stringent erosion controls on contractors and developers.
