AN AWARD-WINNING STORM WATER SCREENING FACILITY

David Bible, Project Manager, ARCADIS G & M.

The Apex Street Storm Screening Facility in Nashville is a fully automated screening facility using an innovative gripper-type traveling rake on an overhead monorail. The screen is designed to remove trash and debris from a large storm drainage ditch that drains over 1,200 acres. The site was subject to chronic plugging by debris and caused flooding of nearby residences and industries. The new facility is operated by the Nashville Department of Water and Sewerage. It is the only installation of its kind in the United States.

David Bible, Project Manager, ARCADIS Geraghty & Miller will show us how the facility was designed and built and explain how it works. The Consulting Engineers of Tennessee selected the project as the top engineering project in the state of Tennessee for 2001.

Frank Anthony, Operations Manager of the Chattanooga News Free Press, provided us a grand tour of the facilities of a modern newspaper. Our large group was treated to the sites of the circulation department, the computer room, the pre-press area with its electronics and plate-making facility and, the operations of the huge printing presses. Frank’s explanation of how a newspaper is assembled and prepared for printing provided us a very educational and interesting perspective. Our many thanks go to Frank for a fantastic field trip.
