TOPIC: Genetic Engineering. Advances and Prospects – Dr. Robert Berglund

The DNA-protein system is an ingeniously simple and extremely powerful solution for creating all kinds of biological properties and structures. By varying the sequence of code words in the DNA, innumerable variations of proteins with very disparate properties can be obtained, sufficient to generate an enormous variety of biological life.

Dr. Berglund will provide us an overview of current genetic engineering efforts and describe some of the resulting products to date as well as the expectations from future research. Dr. Berglund will also describe the Human Genome Project, an international research effort to characterize the genomes of human and selected model organisms through complete mapping and sequencing of their DNA.

Dr. Robert Berglund is a Cardiologist and Medical Director of the Lipid Clinic for the Chattanooga Heart Institute.

OUR PREVIOUS MEETING ________________________________________

Dr. Joe Busch described the state of the art of computerized tomography (CT), positron emission tomography (PET), ultrasound and other advanced medical imaging technologies. He also discussed some of the research conducted in this country and overseas. Dr. Busch held the audience spellbound with his explanations of how various medical diagnostics tools work, and which tools are used for which application. Our meeting had to go into overtime for Dr. Busch to answer all the questions. We greatly appreciate Dr. Busch’s presentation and extended time. Dr. Bush is Chief Radiologist of Diagnostic Radiology Consultants. He supports the diagnostics performed at several leading Chattanooga hospitals and is instrumental in promoting and keeping these hospitals at the cutting edge of imaging technology.
