NEXT MEETING ___________________________________________________

Monday, September 17, noon.

Cellar Restaurant at Union Square

TOPIC: Research and Development Efforts in the Carpet Industry. Jerry Zolkowski,

Georgia Technical Economic Development.

While carpets have been around quite a few years, there is nothing old about what happening in that industry today, especially as it relates to research and development. Jerry Zolkowski, engineer and Manager of Georgia’s Technical Economic Development in Dalton’s Regional Office will describe some of the research projects funded by CCACTI, a consortium of apparel, carpet and textile industries. Their interest includes not only improving carpet and its manufacturing, but also finding appropriate carpet recycling and disposal methods as well as tackling a multitude of environmental issues. Jerry will describe some of the ongoing projects funded by the consortium such as the efforts to lower COD and color in carpet dyeing wastewater, a fiber recycling system, electrostatic application of yarn spin finishes, biological and chemical conversion of nylon 6.6, and elimination of microbial growth. As an introduction to the subject, Jerry will also provide us a brief explanation of how carpets are manufactured.

OUR PREVIOUS MEETING

Dr. Robert Beglund provided us with an interesting presentation on genetic engineering. He explained the relationship of genomes, chromosomes and DNA. He described the structure of DNA, how it is naturally altered in reproduction, how it can be synthetically changed and what results could be obtained in the process. He also describe the Human Genome Project, an international research effort to characterize the genomes of human and selected model organisms through complete mapping and sequencing of their DNA. Both the topic and Dr. Berglund’s interesting style of presentation made it difficult for the audience to leave, drawing the meeting into overtime.
