NEXT MEETING ___________________________________________________
Monday, September 24, noon.
Cellar Restaurant at Union Square September 24:
TOPIC:Sewage and Wastewater Treatment: New Requirements, New Technology Alice Canella, Chattanooga Waste Water Treatment Plant
Because Chattanooga is one of over 1200 cities in the United States that suffers from combined sewer water overflow, it is directly effected by new regulations of the Clean Water Act. Alice Canella, civil engineer with the Chattanooga Waste Water Treatment Plant will provide us with an overview of how Chattanooga is meeting the challenge posed by these regulations.
Alice says that Chattanooga is among the first cities moving to improve our sewer overflow system. It began planning improvements as early as 1987. During visits to leading European facilities, representatives from the Chattanooga Waste Water Treatment Plant gained knowledge that greatly assisted them in the design, equipment selection, and construction of our own combined storm water overflow (CSO) facilities. Seven such facilities are already complete and construction is beginning on an eighth facility
.Alice is responsible for the operation maintenance, repair, and rehabilitation of the Chattanooga sanitary and combined sewers and for the implementation of Chattanooga’s CSO program.

TOPIC: Research and Development Efforts in the Carpet Industry
.
Jerry Zolkowski, Georgia’s Technical Economic Development.
Jerry Zolkowski, engineer and Manager of Georgia’s Technical Economic Development in Dalton’s Regional Office described some of the research projects funded by CCACTI, a consortium of apparel, carpet and textile industries. Jerry discussed ongoing projects such as the efforts to lower COD and color in carpet dyeing wastewater, a fiber recycling system, electrostatic application of yarn spin finishes, biological and chemical conversion of nylon 6.6, and elimination of microbial growth. Waste water contamination by spin finish was identified as the most severe industry wide environmental challenge. Projects findings are non-proprietary and are freely available.
