Monday, October 8: No meeting, in observance of Columbus Day

 

OUR PAST MEETING  October 1______________________________________
As highways have become increasingly clogged with commercial trucks and private vehicles, the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) decided it was time to re-assess the potential of railroads to relieve some of this congestion. To this end, TDOT awarded the engineering firm ARCADIS Garaghty and Miller. a two-year contract to investigate the state of the railway system in Tennessee. Jon Sparkman, ARCADIS project engineer for this study which is currently near its half-way mark, provided us a sneak preview of the findings to date. Jon described the existing infrastructure of the transportation systems throughout the United States. He focused on the state of the railway system in Tennessee and showed how Tennessee fits it to the overall scheme of things. An enthusiastic and interested audience found it difficult to let the meeting end.

The November meetings are hosted by the ASME

 

November 5: “The Chandra X-ray Telescope”. This earth-orbiting telescope is changing our perception of the universe. Dr. Martin Weisskopf Marshall Space Flight Center.

November 19: “Implications of Inter-basin Water Transfers from the Tennessee River”

November 26: “Efforts to Meet the Water Requirements of the Sequatchie Valley”, ARCADIS G&M
