NEXT EVENT ____________________________________________

Monday, October 29:

A Field Trip to Visit the Chattanooga Wastewater Treatment Facility

This will be great opportunity for us to see how, in today’s environment, wastewater from a relatively large population such as the Chattanooga area is treated. Jerry Steward, manager of the facility, will take us on the tour. The tour will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the administration building near the entrance to the plant. To get to the facility from the downtown area, take highway 27 north across the Olgiati Bridge (Tennessee River). Take the first exit after you cross the bridge (it is not marked). That will put you onto Manufacturer’s Road (which is also not marked). Head west under the bridge for about a quarter of a mile until you see Hamm Road on your left. Turn onto Hamm Road. It will take you directly in front of the wastewater treatment facility when it T’s onto Moccasin Bend Road. A guard will guide you to a parking area. Be careful: if some people dressed in white overalls approach you with what appears to be a white jacket with strings on it, you have gone too far. Make haste to leave the area and try to retrace your steps.

Dr. Claire McCullough, Associate Professor of Engineering at UTC described a program that is designed to encourage girls to consider careers in these fields, and to continue their education in science and mathematics and describe some of its salient features. The program, entitled "Adventures in Computers, Engineering, and Space" (ACES), is conducted by UTC in partnership with Girls Incorporated of Chattanooga and the UTC Challenger Learning Center. She said the program begins with a residential summer workshop for twenty-four girls entering seventh and eighth grades. The workshop provides space-related activities at the UTC Challenger Learning Center and hands-on activities in computer science and electrical, mechanical, and industrial engineering. During the school year, follow-up activities will include design projects that encourage originality in solving problems with constraints. To widen the influence of the project, an ACES Fair, featuring hands-on engineering, computer, and space activities, will be conducted at selected elementary and middle schools, and community centers. The project is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation.
