Many thanks to our resident ghost writer
for providing us this presentation summary.
Modern Hydraulics- Powerful and Precise. Hydraulics are powerful,
small, and can be placed in harsh environments. Steve McGuire of Robins and
Bohr stressed several things during his presentation which was complete
with cut away versions of hydraulic filters, hydraulic quick disconnects,
hydraulic pistons, and sealed valves.
Don't specify pipe threads! Steve
explained the difference between pipe connections and a JIC hydraulic connection
with an O-ring on one side and a 37 degree conical face on the other side. Pipe
connections have to be torqued too much to avoid leaks in a hydraulic system.
O-ring fittings trap the fluid, and JIC swivel fittings act as convenient unions
for assembly.
Pick out a filter based on dirt holding, as well as micron
rating. A paper filter may cost less, but it will need to be changed more
often than a synthetic media filter. The least costly filter may end up being
the most costly to use.
Use lighted connectors so you can quickly see if a
problem may be the loss of control voltage or a hydraulic problem.
Fix it
before it breaks! Hydraulic systems rely on bushings and U cup seals to keep the
piston metal from ever touching the cylinder metal. Replace these regularly to
avoid ever having to hone the cylinder. There have been many mergers of
hydraulic equipment suppliers. The three dominant remaining companies are
Parker, Bosch, and Vickers.
