MEETING___________________________________________
Monday,
October 7 - noon
Location: The Cellar Restuarant
Topic: An Update of TVA's Regenesys
Project – Ian Grant, Project Manager, TVA
Storage of electricity on a large scale offers a range of
benefits to power utilities but few technologies are available for energy
storage in the multi-MWh range. Those that have been successful to date are
pumped storage, compressed air, and lead acid batteries (up to 10-20 MW).
Several new battery technologies now in development offer improvements over
lead-acid, including the Regenesys Flow Battery which uses two liquid
electrolytes as a means of energy storage. The first full-scale Regenesys unit
is approaching completion in England, while a second unit with 12 MW steady
state and 19 MW peak rating is being constructed for TVA to improve supply to
the Columbus Air Force Base. Ian Grant, project manager of TVA’s Regenesys
Project, will describe to us contending storage technologies and the
factors and benefits considered by TVA in making its choice, and progress on
construction of the Columbus unit.
Fellowship: Alameda Frazier
Invocation: Jim Stites
Menu: Italian Chicken over rice, tossed salad, vegatable
medley, and apple cobbler

A Plant Tour of LifeTouch – guided by
John Love, Senior Production Manager
LifeTouch is a national school portrait
company, with labs across the country. The company has made the transition from
traditional photographic processes to digital imaging .On our tour
we learned about image and data acquisition, storage and control of
enormous amounts (terabytes) of image data, and methods used to improve picture
quality and correct for color and shade imbalances. We will also saw how mass
production is achieved and how people work in this new digital-age environment.
Benefits include lower scrap by 40% since on screen review being of a true color
image instead of viewing a negative allowed more accurate selection of shade.
The new digital system also reduced time to manufacture and work in process by
reducing rework and providing fewer manual-handling operations, since once
received the negatives are scanned then handled digitally thereafter. Due to
high digital camera costs and limited high speed data transfer rates, analog
film based camera’s are still being used in the field. The film is then
UPS-delivered at LifeTouch and scanned into the digital format for
processing.
THE TRAFFIC TASK FORCE REPORT
______________________________________
A reminder to those who would like to review the
Engineers Club Traffic Task Force Report: it can be found on our web site at www.chattanooga.net/engineer/CEC.
Just click on the link at the top of the page. Here you will find not only the
report itself, but at the end, there is a list of links to various newspaper
articles, letters to the editor and other remarks about this community issue.
There is also a recent letter from Jack Anderson to the Engineers Club about
efforts by one organization to address this issue further.
PROPOSED BY-LAW
CHANGES______________________________________
To maintain better
continuity for the CEC bookkeeping work, a number of past CEC presidents have
proposed to make the position of Treasurer one that is held for longer than a
year. The position would be appointed by the Executive Committee and would be
held by someone who would volunteer to take on the associated bookkeeping task
for an extended period of time. To change the way the treasurer is chosen
requires a change in the CEC constitution and by-laws. The proposed changes can
be seen by clicking on the appropriate link on our web site at www.chattanooga.net/engineer/CEC
. Also shown are proposed minor changes to some of the officer
duties.
ELECTION OF OFFICER
