NEXT WEEK____________________________________________________

Monday October 14: There will be No meeting in observance of Columbus Day

NEXT MEETING will be October 21

OUR PREVIOUS MEETING – October 7 _________________________________
Ian Grant, TVA Project Manager, provided us with an update of the Regenesys Energy Storage System and showed photographs of the system under construction. He said that storage of electricity on a large scale offers a range of benefits to power utilities but few technologies are available for energy storage in the multi-MWh range. Those that have been successful to date are pumped storage, compressed air, and lead acid batteries (up to 10-20 MW). Several new battery technologies now in development offer improvements over lead-acid, including the Regenesys Flow Batteries that use two liquid electrolytes as a means of energy storage. The first full-scale Regenesys unit is approaching completion in England. A second unit with 12 MW steady state and 19 MW peak rating is being constructed for TVA to improve supply to the Columbus Air Force Base. Ian compared contending storage technologies and the factors and benefits considered by TVA in making its choice, and progress on construction of the Columbus unit. Ian discussed why Regenesys was selected from all the storage technologies available. He showed graphically the advantages of an energy storage system over upgrading transmission service in other ways. He said that among Regenesys’ benefits are a fast response time and high ramp rate.

PROPOSED BY-LAW CHANGES______________________________________
To maintain better continuity for the CEC bookkeeping work, a number of past CEC presidents have proposed to make the position of Treasurer one that is held for longer than a year. The position would be appointed by the Executive Committee and would be held by someone who would volunteer to take on the associated bookkeeping task for an extended period of time. To change the way the treasurer is chosen requires a change in the CEC constitution and by-laws. The proposed changes can be seen by clicking on the appropriate link on our web site at
www.chattanooga.net/engineer/CEC . Also shown are proposed minor changes to some of the officer duties. A vote on the proposed changes will be held at our regular meeting on October 21.

ELECTION OF OFFICER ______________________________________

Election of officers for next year will be held at our regular meeting on November 25. If you are interested in being a candidate or would like to suggest someone as candidate, please get in touch with Lulu Copeland (copeland@chattanoogastate.edu or 697-3212) or Jack Wagner (wagnerja@epb.net or 648-3594). Of particular need is the filling of the position of Secretary for next year.
