NEXT WEEK : NO
MEETING___________________________________________
Monday
November 11:
There will be no Engineers Club Meeting for Monday
November 11 in observance of Veterans Day.
OUR PREVIOUS MEETING - November

Dr. Dale Quattrochi, a Geographer
and Senior Research Scientist with NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, presented
satellite and aerial photography to illustrate the presence of the
urban-heating-island (UHI). This "island" is in the form of a dome of elevated
air temperatures hovering in and around "mega-cities." It is caused by the
presence of various types of surfaces across the city landscape that absorbs and
stores solar radiation throughout the day and then releases this energy at
night. Not only does the UHI influence the air temperatures over cities, but it
also enhances the production of ground level ozone over urban areas. The UHI
also has an impact on local meteorology and influences the overall
sustainability or habitability of the urban environment. For more information on
Atlanta's "urban heat island"
see:http://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/imagewall/LandSat/atlanta_heat_background.html
.
Dr.Quattrochi said that NASA has studied a number of cities and examined
the characteristics of cities that heat up more than others. NASA is analyzing
the cause and effect relationship then making this knowledge available to city
planners to improve their ability to design comfortable living areas in cities.
Roof or pavement surfaces that are more reflective reduce the UHI effect. Also,
adding trees that provide shading and do not give off much BVOC (Biological
Volatile Organic Compounds) help reduce the air temperature rise in cities. Oak
and Pine trees are not recommended for urban plantings, because they emit BVOC.
Many of the color thermal infrared and reflective infrared photographs over
Atlanta, Georgia that were shown at the meeting are included under "the urban
environment" at the following web site:
