Topic: Managing and Exploiting Your Company's Knowledge
-- Dr. Rick Keyser, UTC
An expert is someone who lives in another town; the further he
comes from, the more expert he is. Well, Dr. Rick Keyser, for one, does not
subscribe to that notion. Dr. Keyser is professor of Industrial Engineering and
Engineering Management at UTC. He says that the experts you are looking for to
better run your business probably reside right under your own corporate roof:
they are your own employees. Dr. Keyser says that most managers overlook the
tremendous knowledge and talents that every employee possesses. By better
getting to know that talent and giving it a chance to work for you, the more
likely you are to make your business succeed. Dr. Keyser has studied that
principle for some time now and is has come up with some valuable ways to
identify your corporate talent and to involve your employees in decision
processes from the beginning of a project to the end. Dr. Keyser will tell us
just how you would go about doing so. Specifically, he will discuss the role of
"knowledge management" in an engineering design process and present a
roadmap for managing and incorporating organizational knowledge into the
project's design effort. He says that he has found the process to not only
reduce an organization's cost and cycle-time, but also improve reliability and
employee satisfaction. He believes it is key to sustaining a company's
competitive advantage.
