Topic: Technology Transfer and Economic Development – Dr.
Terry Payne
The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is one of the most active
government laboratories where technology development is advancing at a rapid
pace. Oak Ridge is recognized as a world leader in R&D. One of the
laboratory’s objectives is to make the newer technologies available to the
public sector and to help with their commercial application. Dr. Terry Payne,
Program Manager of the Government Partnership Programs Office at ORNL will tell
us about some of the ongoing projects that ORNL and explain how private industry
could participate in efforts to commercialize spin-off technologies. Several
multi-billion dollar industries have spun out of ORNL’s and NASA’s programs in
the past including silicone chips, gas turbine blade materials, solar cells, and
cell phones. Local industries have an opportunity to take advantage of ORNL’s
resources and perhaps, could also become the next group of technology
billionaires!

OUR PREVIOUS MEETING - November
18_________________________________
Dr. Keyser, professor of Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management
at UTC, told us that the experts you are looking for to better run your business
probably reside right under your own corporate roof: they are your own
employees. Most managers overlook the tremendous knowledge and talents that
every employee possesses. Dr. Keyser has come up with some valuable ways to
identify your corporate talent and to involve your employees in decision
processes from the beginning of a project to the end. He discussed the role of
"knowledge management" in the engineering design process and presented a roadmap
for managing and incorporating organizational knowledge into the project's
design effort. He says that he has found the process to not only reduces an
organization's cost and cycle-time, but also improves reliability and employee
satisfaction. He believes it is key to sustaining a company's competitive
advantage in today’s unstable labor market.
