Monday
December 2 -noon
Cellar Restaurant, Downtown
Topic: Where Has all the Water Gone? Water Resource
Challenges for the 21st Century and Beyond- Dr. Michael J. Sale
Water is becoming one of the most critical natural resources for human
health and sustainable economic development. This is because both in
the U.S. and internationally, water demands are increasing substantially.
At the same time, climate variability and change, plus and ever-expanding human
population and changing public values are threaten to reduce available supplies.
Dr. Michael J. Sale, Leader of the Water Resources Group of Oak Ridge National
Laboratory (ORNL), will provide us with a global perspective of the water
resource issues. He says that today as never before, both the quantity and
quality our out planet's fresh water are under threat.
He envisions greater and more serious conflicts over water rights
not only between countries but also between neighbors. He cautions that we
should not be misled by the apparent abundant supply in some fortunate parts of
the world such as in Tennessee. Even these will become hotbeds of contention. He
says that research and technology applications can solve some to the looming
crisis, but only if attention is paid to the water needs from our own backyard
as well as to the needs of developing countries. The challenge presents
new opportunities for Tennessee volunteers.
Dr. Sale is a Distinguished Research Staff Member in the Environmental
Sciences Division of ORNL. He is also a Fellow Member of the American Water
Resources Association and has served as a member of the Water Sector
Assessment Team for the National Climate Change Assessment.

OUR PREVIOUS MEETING - November

Thanks to Judy Driggans for
this summary.
Dr. Terry Payne from Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) told us how his
agency is making newer technologies available through technology transfer
combined with economic development. ORNL wants the companies to succeed in
marketing products based on their inventions. He mentioned their 2-year degree
program where many students leave with not only a degree, but also with the
beginnings of a new company. He gave examples of three companies ( nLine
Corporation, POCO Graphite, Inc., and Caliper Technologies) who had their
products on the market in abiut four years from the original invention at
ORNL. There are eighteen laboratories at ORNL that may be used by U.S. companies
or U.S. citizens for research. For more information about these laboratories or
the joint research possibilities with ORNL, see their web site at
www.ornl.gov/tted/UserFacilities.htm#UserFacilitiesList
or for general information, visit
