MEETING:___________________________________________
Monday
December 9 -noon
Cellar Restaurant, Downtown
Topic: America After 9/11: A Vision for Homeland Security
- Dr. Michael A. Kuliasha, ORNL
The terrorist attacks of 9/11 fundamentally
changed America's outlook and sense of security. How is the United States
responding and what are the prospects for success? Dr. Michael Kuliasha,
Director for Homeland Security from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, will describe
the current U.S. strategy for homeland security and the key role that technology
will play in that plan. He says that some of the technologies under development
include sensors for explosives, chemical, biological, and nuclear materials. Dr.
Kuliasha will also explain how advances in information technology will be
helping the effort. He says that technologies that contribute to homeland
security will also have benefits elsewhere in the economy and society. He will
describe some of the likely spin-offs.
Invocation: Chuck
Chamberlin
Fellowship: Bernard Cheatham
OUR PREVIOUS MEETING - November
25_________________________________

Dr. Michael J. Sale, Leader of the Water
Resources Group of Oak Ridge National Laboratory provided us with a global
perspective of the water resource issues. He said that water is becoming one of
the most critical natural resources for human health and sustainable economic
development. This is because water demands in the U.S. and internationally
are increasing dramatically. At the same time, climate variability and change,
plus an ever-expanding human population are threaten to reduce available
supplies. He said that today as never before, both the quantity and quality our
out planet's fresh water are under threat. He envisions greater and more serious
conflicts over water rights not only between countries but also between
neighbors. He cautioned that we should not be misled by the apparent abundant
supply in some fortunate parts of the world such as in Tennessee. Even these
will become hotbeds of contention. He said that research and technology
applications can solve some to the looming crisis, but only if attention is paid
to the water needs from our own backyard as well as to the needs of developing
countries.
