TOPIC: The Design and Function of
the Spallation Neutron Source Facility
Tony Chargin, Division Director for Conventional Facilities,
ORNL
The Spallation Neutron Source Facility under construction in Oak
Ridge is destined to change the way material and structural research is
performed. At the heart of this 1.4 billion-dollar facility is an accelerator
that is used to generate neutrons from a mercury target. The neutrons are then
used to image materials and their crystalline structures in order to measure
physical properties. Mr. Tony Chargin, Division Director for Conventional
Facilities at the Spallation Neutron Source, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, will
describe the accelerator and its fundamental operating characteristics. He says
that what makes this accelerator unique is its ability to create large clusters
of neutrons - which is no small feat. Large clusters speed the material
diagnostics process and allows materials research to proceed at a much faster
pace. When the facility is completed in the summer of 2006 we can expect it to
help develop many new and exotic materials.

OUR PREVIOUS MEETING
January 14 _________________________________
Our own Tiffany Gibby
provided us an overview of TVA's use of Geographic Positioning System
technologies and demonstrated the early stages of their application. Tiffany is
a project engineer with TVA's Transmission Operations & Maintenance where
she is responsible for helping develop a GPS-based representation of TVA
transmission system. She explained that computer simulations of the system will
greatly improve many processes, especially emergency restoration, by showing
aerial photographs and video of right-of-way corridors. The application
incorporates layers of information - crew areas, lakes and waterways,
topographic and road maps, endangered species areas, and others - on top of
which the transmission system can be shown relative to other geographic
information.
