OUR PREVIOUS MEETING  February 11, 2002_______________________________
CEC0207.jpg - 3918 BytesDr. Arvid Pasto, Director of The Oak Ridge National Laboratory High Temperature Materials Research Laboratory spoke about, the lab's work and it's discoveries.  Experiments at the lab have increased understanding of solidifying metal, ceramic surface chemistry, and residual stress inside solids. Applications of their work have improved the performance of jet engines, the space shuttle, catalytic reactors and pollution control equipment. Dr Pasto sees an increased use of ceramics in future motor vehicles. Their application, however, will be limited to where high temperature operation and longer service life justifies the increased cost of the ceramics.

High Temperature Materials Research Laboratory at Oak Ridge is seen as a leading organization for the Tennessee high technology corridor. Their mission and facility is described at www.ms.ornl.gov/htmlhome.
