NEXT MEETING
____________________________________________
Monday, February
25- 12:00 noon
Cellar Restaurant at Union Square
Topic: Biotechnology and Mouse Genetics . Dr.
Barry Berven, ORNL
Recent legal and ethical questions have increasingly brought
life sciences into political controversy. Following the sequencing of the human
genome, advances in biological research have occurred at an extraordinary rate.
Cloning of sheep, growing spare human organs in pigs, and "contamination" of the
corn supply are only the most recent issues receiving media and legislative
attention. Dr. Barry Berven Associate Director of Life Sciences Division at Oak
Ridge National Laboratory will speak on genetic and biomedical research at the
Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He will also describe some of the downstream
applications he envisions we can look forward to in the near future. Dr. Bervin
says that many of the recent advances have practical applications such as
identification of genetic disease, cloning, and designing genetically modified
food.
Invocation: Richard Smith
Fellowship: Jim Bell
Entrée du jour: Pot Roast w/ carrots & onions

A Joint meeting of the CEC and E-Week
Committee: The Engineers Week Kickoff Luncheon - UTC Campus
We are happy to report that our own Jack Wagner is the
recipient of the "People to People Award". Congratulations Jack
Wagner!
Commissioner Ron Littlefield spoke on a variety of topics
including community development, local successes and failures in industrial
recruiting, and consequences of inflexible local tax policy for choking job
creation. Interestingly, Tennessee budget woes do not threaten the dedicated
I-75 exit for the Volunteer site since highway work is gas tax
funded.
