NEXT MEETING
____________________________________________
Monday, March 11- 12:00 noon
Cellar
Restaurant at Union Square
Topic: Superconductivity. Dr. Bob
Hawsey, Director of ORNL's Superconductivity Section
We all know that when electricity travels through a normal
conductor it encounters resistance and a portion of its energy is lost as heat.
But when certain materials are cooled to extremely low temperatures, their
resistance to current flow drops zero and the material become "superconductive".
As a result, extremely strong and compact magnets are possible as are high speed
computing devices. Bob will brief us on the emergence of this technology as a
laboratory curiosity into commercial use. Today, superconductivity is proving to
be important in increasing generator efficiency, reducing transformer losses,
and containing high-energy plasma for fusion reactors.
Invocation: Richard Smith
Fellowship: Jim Bell
Entrée du jour: Sliced Roast Beef
OUR PREVIOUS MEETING March 4
________________________________
Bob Pap, President Accurate
Automation
Engineering managers are faced with the daunting task of inventing
on a schedule. Bob Pap shared some of the tricks and techniques for motivating
engineers and keeping fresh idea's flowing. Accurate Automation's role in
testing and developing advanced military and civilian avionics came about though
the use of retired technical experts. The small business administration provided
seed capital for developing high-risk leading edge technologies. Bob said that
the Chattanooga Mayor's Office is starting a task force to encourage high tech
(engineering intensive) industries to settle in this area.
