Monday, April
15- 12:00 noon
Cellar Restaurant
Topic: UTC Senior Engineering Design Project
Presentations - Teams 3 & 4
Nylon Extruder Quench Screen - Chris Gadd and
Merritt Moss
The Dupont Plant in Chattanooga extrudes molten nylon that
solidifies into strands when cool air is blown over it. The Senior
Engineering Design students were challenged to redesign a "screen" that would
optimize the air flow over the hot nylon. The plan was to avoid frequent
breakage of the strands caused by turbulent air flow. This would reduce the
scrap of broken and discarded strands and significantly reduce operating
costs. Project team members, Chris Gadd and Merritt Moss will describe how
they tackled the job and the results of the finding to date.
Electric Vehicle User Interface - Tony
Madewell and Daryl Everett
Student team members Tony Madewell and Daryl
Everett will describe their work on the development of a simulator that
determines the performance of a hybrid electric vehicle under different
operating conditions. The effort is part of a research project sponsored the
Electric Transit Vehicle Institute.
Invocation: Ron Burton
Fellowship: Almeda
Frazier
Entrée du jour: Backed Ham

Improved Student Learning - Glenda Russel
Ms. Russel has developed a system to better understand student test scores,
design suitable curriculum, improve instruction skills, and achieve higher
learning in the classroom. The system, which she calls Personalized Assessment
Management System or PAMS, has already helped improve student learning in many
Tennessee school systems. By tracking student objectives weekly, teachers are
able to pinpoint specific skills that need to be enhanced or re-taught before
the weakness becomes detrimental to future learning. PAMS also allows the
teachers to self-evaluate the effectiveness of their own teaching strategies.
Ms. Russel is a former fifth-grade math teacher. She says that while she first
applied the system to her math classes, the program addresses all
curriculums.
