OUR PREVIOUS MEETING - May 20____________________________
Thanks to Judy Driggans for providing us with a draft of this summary:
CEC0221.jpg - 3457 BytesRalph Kelley, former mayor of Chattanooga and current bankruptcy judge, discussed the planned change of traffic flow on McCallie Avenue and M.L King Boulevard by the Chattanooga City Council. The change would convert these current one-way streets to two-way streets.

Judge Kelley said that he is pleased how the downtown Chattanooga area has become vibrant and that people from other parts of the country come here to study what it would take to bring life back to their own downtown areas.  But he is perplexed about the need to change two of the main roads into the downtown Chattanooga area into two-way streets. Doing so would reduce the four lanes on these two roads to a single lane in each direction.  Existing traffic lights would need to be replaced with two-way lights and in some cases with turn signals.  Also, the change would likely delay traffic entering or leaving downtown during rush hours; it would also effect safely.  He solicited comments and discussion from the audience about this subject. Much of those discussions centered on potential traffic delays, safety and expense. Kelly said that two studies about the effects of the proposed change have been made in the past four years. One was made in 1998 by a Nashville firm, Neel-Schaefer, Inc. who estimates the conversion cost at more that $7 million. The other study conducted in May by an Orlando firm hired by the city commission puts the cost at about one million dollars. Kelley asked that members of the club study these reports and come to a conclusion of their own. Members of the Chattanooga Times Free Press as well as Channel 9 and Channel 12 news media were in attendance.

If you would like to participate in an ad-hock committee to review these studies and to assess the merits of the plan from an engineering perspective, please call Jack Anderson. He can be reached at 629-1087.
