Topic:  Control Logic Model for Data Intense Environments - Tony Wheeler, Wheeler & Associates

Most of us don't think twice about flipping a light switch as we walk into a room.  Of course if you work for an electric utility you think about providing this level of reliability to your customers on a daily basis.  Part of providing this level of reliability depends greatly on how structurally sound your electric system (primarily wooden poles and crossarms) are.  It comes as no surprise that utilities are constantly looking for ways to quickly inspect and insure their systems are in tip top shape.  That's where our speaker Tony Wheeler, president of Wheeler & Associates comes in.  Tony will present to us his company's solution for inspecting the present internal condition of wood poles and crossarms in an objective, accurate, timely, and cost effective manor.  He will specifically concentrate on the data gathering issues from an infrared sensor platform mounted on a helicopter.  He will also comment about how this technology can be applied to other industries as well.

OUR PREVIOUS MEETING _________________________________________

Dr. W. R. Briley talked about their applications driven research illustrated in the calendars given out at the end of the meeting.  They have modeled maneuvering of tiltrotor aircraft and submarines.  They are beginning to model and study the submarine crashback maneuver where the propeller is suddenly reversed in an effort to protect and redirect the submarine.  They will be involving students at UTC in teams of multiple disciplines as they assist in the research with the SimCenter staff.  About 15 of the 18 SimCenter staff came from Mississippi State University to UTC.  UTC has a masters program in computational engineering and is proposing a PhD program.
