NEXT WEEK____________________________________________
Monday, May 12 - noon
 Cellar Restaurant, Downtown

Topic:  Technologies to Enhance Learning - Fred Carr, Hamilton County School System

Schools have changed a lot in recent years with the introduction of computers, access to web sites, email, VCRs and other technological innovations.  For example, how many of us were able to email our teachers for assignments on the days we were at home because of illness?

Fred Carr will give us an update on the latest technologies tried and used in our schools, how well they have worked, and plans for the near future. Fred is Assistant Superintendent for Technology and Support Services for the Hamilton County School System. He says that educational technologies are evolving so rapidly that training and technical support is vital to help teachers operate the technologies they will have in the classroom. Fred notes that training all of the teachers in the Hamilton County school system to a significant level of competency in the use of current technologies is a major undertaking, one which will require broad support throughout the school system and the community.

Invocation will be led by Jim Stites.

Menu:  Fried chicken tenders, Caesar salad, Macaroni & Cheese, Green beans, Pineapple pudding

OUR PREVIOUS MEETING_________________________________
Recorded and written by Judy Driggans
Mike Ingram, Tennessee Valley Authority, opened his presentation with an interesting evening photograph showing lights from the major cities in the United States.  California was missing.  The picture was taken during the blackout that occurred in August 1996.  A sagging conductor (probably from the summer heat) was thought to have started the chain of events that caused the blackout.  He also showed graphically a small but definite range in system voltages illustrating the need for reactive power.  Near industrial sights the voltage was slightly lower.  Electric generation plants were easy to locate on this graph, because the voltage near them was high.
Some of the power delivery research and development projects underway that have been collaborative efforts by many including the Electric Power Research Institute, Department of Energy, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratory, Office of Naval Research, Vanderbilt University, Virginia Tech University, and others.  Many of the projects described are discussed at this web site:
